What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to birthing people before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike medical professionals, doulas focus entirely on your comfort and advocating for your birth preferences.
Research shows that doula support significantly reduces cesarean rates, shortens labor, decreases interventions, and improves birth satisfaction—especially crucial for BIPOC communities facing higher maternal mortality rates.
Our Founder's Journey
Michelle Hollie founded Sunflower Womb Wellness with a vision of reclaiming birth as a sacred, empowering experience for all—particularly for Black, Indigenous, and people of color who have historically faced dismissal and discrimination in medical settings.
Currently completing her doula certification (July 2025), Michelle brings ancestral wisdom, cultural sensitivity, and deep compassion to every birthing space she enters.
Understanding Birth Options: Hospital vs. Natural Birth
1
Hospital Birth Considerations
While providing emergency medical access, hospital births have higher intervention rates including unnecessary C-sections (particularly for BIPOC birthing people), restricted movement, and routine procedures that can disrupt the natural birthing process. Studies show Black women are 3-4 times more likely to experience maternal mortality in hospital settings.
2
Natural Birth Benefits
Natural births—whether at home or birth centers—typically offer greater autonomy, fewer interventions, more comfort measures, and care that respects cultural practices. Research shows lower infection rates, faster recovery, and stronger bonding for low-risk pregnancies, with proper preparation and support.
